Hormone replacement therapy causing acne?

While it’s tempting to reach for aggressive “acne-fighting” products, those formulas are usually too much for skin that’s already sensitive.

#2 – Double cleansing is a must.

  • This means using an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-based cleanser.

  • Oil-based cleansers dissolve excess oil (sebum) that can contribute to acne.

  • They also remove sunscreen, makeup, pollen, and car pollution.

  • Regular water-based cleansers only remove dirt and sweat.

#3 – Use a serum with LESS than 10% niacinamide.

  • 10% is too high for many people and can cause irritation.

  • Instead, look for something in the 2–5% range, or a serum that includes niacinamide as part of a well-balanced ingredient list.

  • And yes — avoid that famous white bottle of 10% Niacinamide serum from the beauty store!

  • With niacinamide, more is not better. Balanced is better.

#1 – Keep cleansers gentle and creamy.

  • Foaming cleansers tend to be drying for the skin. Dried-out skin makes acne worse!

  • Creamy cleansers support your skin barrier rather than stripping it.

  • They should not contain exfoliants like salicylic acid. Everyday use of a cleanser that contains an exfoliant often leads to over-exfoliation, irritation, and dryness.

#4 – For body, use a creamy body wash with salicylic acid 2 times a week.

  • Avoid scrubs. They are harsh, and difficult to use on areas like the shoulders and back.

  • Use a creamy body wash containing salicylic acid just 2–3x per week.

  • Back facials are an excellent way to keep the skin healthy and supported, even if you aren't experiencing breakouts in that area.

I highly recommend visiting an esthetician for guidance during this transition. Often, your previous routine simply isn’t right for where your skin is currently. Or the skin barrier has become compromised, and needs some TLC to get back to healthy. A bit of guidance during this time can make all the difference.
